Top 3 Mexican Destinations to Hit for the Best Cocktails

by James Stevenson

If mixology is a passion for you and not just a mere hobby, why not try to tap into a little bit of that magic on your Mexican vacation? The land south of the border is teeming with ingredients for unforgettable cocktails, and we’re not just talking about the ubiquitous margaritas and piña coladas. Here’s some inside information on three of Mexico’s top libation destinations.

Riviera Nayarit

Nestled along the Pacific coast, Riviera Nayarit is home to a number of hot resort destinations. Among the newest is W Punta de Mita, a luxurious getaway with one of the most unique bars in the region, Chevyceria, a beachside ceviche bar fashioned out of a vintage Chevy truck. Try the Piwiwi, a refresher made from tequila, agave, fresh grapefruit and lime juices, honey, and soda water. You also don’t want to miss out on the weekly “mescal lab,” led by head mixologist Alex Montes.

Cabo San Lucas

There are many things to do in Cabo San Lucas, among which is to explore the cocktails that it has to offer. Try a mescal tasting flight at La Lupita, where the trendy Mexican liquor is served in traditional hollowed-out gourds (called jicaras), or make your way to the city’s outskirts where you can sample a tamarind old fashioned at Acre, a local watering hole and a leader in the farm-to-cocktail revolution. Before you go, you won’t want to miss the Rooftop at the Cape, which provides gorgeous 360-degree views of the Cabo skyline. It’s the perfect backdrop for your next Instagram post.

Mexico City

While the nation’s capital isn’t the first place most vacationers think of when they’re dreaming about their Mexican vacation, it’s a veritable paradise for cocktail lovers. The city features a multitude of bars and lounges, all known for serving up creatively themed cocktails until the wee hours of the morning.

As the sultry Mexican heat provides the perfect foil for cooling gin drinks, why not make them the focus of your tour? Start with a Bohemian Tonic (a fragrant concoction of Tanqueray London Dry Gin, Becherovka bitters, cinnamon, grapefruit bitters and tonic) at Licorería Limantour. If you’re still able to pronounce the name of that spot when you’ve finished, move on to Fifty Mils, located in the local Four Seasons Hotel, where they offer a delightfully eclectic variety of signature drinks.

No matter which corner of Mexico you visit, you’re bound to discover some unique flavor combinations if you’re willing to venture beyond the obvious. ¡Salud!
