Strawberry Basil Paloma

by James Stevenson

The Paloma is a perfect example of a great cocktail that can be made without limes if you like. I love ordering Palomas when I go out because they provide some variety from the regular usually over sweetened Margarita. A traditional Paloma consists of tequila, lime juice, and grapefruit soda.

I really like to stray from tradition so I have cut the limes out and added fresh grapefruit juice, basil, and strawberries. The strawberries in this drink make it amazing! They add a slight sweetness while delighting the appetite with fresh fruit. The basil also adds a fresh component that really enhances the tequila. This drink could easily be made into a beautiful Paloma punch by muddling the ingredients in big batches and topping it off with squirt soda. Forget the limes go for the grapefruit and make this Strawberry Basil Paloma.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 ounces of tequila
  • ½ grapefruit, juiced
  • 2 strawberries, chopped
  • 5 basil leaves
  • 1 cup ice
  • 1 bottle of squirt soda
  • 1 orange, juiced

Garnish: Basil, strawberries and salt rim

Instructions:

  1. Fill shaker with tequila, grapefruit juice, chopped strawberries, ice and basil leaves.
  2. Shake for 20 seconds
  3. Rim serving glass with salt (I used a clear mason jar)
  4. Pour mixture into serving glass and top off with squirt soda
  5. Garnish with basil and strawberries
