“Legend” of Casillero del Diablo

by James Stevenson

Happy HalloWine, everyone! Super excited to partner with Casillero del Diablo for Halloween this year. I first got turned on to this beautiful wine when I was traveling in Chile last year. I got the opportunity to live in Santiago, Chile for a month, as well as travel through Patagonia. Casillero del Diablo is hosting its annual “Legendary” Halloween costume contest, and you can enter for a chance to win $1,000. Click in this link to see all the details.

I love the story behind the winery and the contest. In 1883, when Don Melchor de Concha y Toro discovered that his wine was being stolen from his home, he spread a rumor that his casillero (wine cellar) was haunted by the devil to discourage thieves. The original cellar is now a top attraction that you can visit in Chile. I love this wine and decided to have a bit of an early party to celebrate Halloween. The theme was a spooky wine and cheese party complete with Casillero del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon and Casillero del Diablo Red Blend. Both of these wines went perfectly with an assortment of hard and soft cheeses, as well as a homemade cheese ball and assorted meats.

The Cabernet Sauvignon went perfectly with all the cheese because of its rich flavorful body with notes of dark fruits that really cut through the cheese. This is the result of the amazing terroir synonymous of Chile, with the almost constant sunshine mixed with cooler winds and amazingly fertile soils. It is never hard to find a high-quality bottle of wine from Chile and amongst them all, Casillero del Diablo is the standard setter that all others look to.
